PERFORMANCE THERAPY

Have you ever experienced a time where it seemed like you could do no wrong-everything came together in perfect harmony with what seemed like effortless ease? Maybe you were training or even better it was during competition! This is often called FLOW state-where body and mind operate efficiently and fluidly. This is where High Performance lives! Of course, if you are an athlete, there are often days where you are sore or tired or stressed or just not at your very best. Performance Medicine and Sports Therapy can help you get closer to your optimal function on a more consistent basis.

Performance Therapy is a comprehensive physical treatment approach to functional problems, addressing the root cause of dysfunction and associated patterns by identifying limitations in technical, biomechanical or biochemical efficiency. Unlike treating an acute injury, where the goal is to support healing, the goal of performance therapy is to facilitate optimal functioning of the body’s systems. Ideally, performance therapy is delivered prior to, during or immediately following training, in order to preempt potential injuries, limit dysfunctional movement patterns, enhance neuromotor pathways and optimize recovery. This integrated approach results in improvements in output both short and long term.

Just as the body’s systems do not operate in isolation, Performance Therapy is part of an overall inclusive plan to improve function. By modulating the nervous, musculoskeletal, fascial and fluid systems of the body, Performance Therapy has an immediate, observable and direct impact on movement capability. During both Training and Strength and Conditioning, Performance Therapy functionally improves mobility, stability, strength and speed. As well, as the saying goes, ‘you are what you eat’. Proper nutrient supply is of utmost importance for human performance. The ability to assimilate and deliver nutrients to the end target (nervous system and muscle) can be amplified by Performance Therapy through improved digestion, blood/lymphatic flow to and from tissues and nerve supply. Likewise, recovery post training is enhanced via the same biochemical pathways. Another way Performance Therapy supports an athlete is through regulation of the Autonomic nervous system-this is your fight, flight or freeze system. Performance Psychology and mindset training tap into this aspect of athletic performance. Performance Therapy modulates this higher nervous system, allowing athletes easier access and control when working with a mindset coach as well as improving sleep and breath control. Just like all aspects of human performance, Performance Therapy is an ongoing process, continually refining and adapting to the body’s needs based on the demands placed upon it, in order to maximize your potential.

Many of today’s top athletes include Performance Therapy as a regular part of their training and recovery. If you want to achieve your best, be sure to include Performance Therapy as part your overall program!
